Slice of Life — Still Life with Cutlets

A WOMAN, mid-40’s, and her MOTHER sit next to each other in a messy KITCHEN. They are scrolling through pictures on a digital camera.

WOMAN

And there she is gardening out back. And at the farmers market…oh! There’s the dress!

MOTHER

Cute! Fits her perfectly. Ooooh, and look at her there!

WOMAN

I know. And here she is in art class. More art class. Art class…out of focus…more art class…

The mother takes the camera.

MOTHER

Let me see. So sweet. She’s beautiful! How do I click to the next one?

The woman shows her, then rises.

WOMAN

I’m going to grab my tea.

She crosses the room. The mother continues staring at the camera and scrolling forward.

MOTHER

Ooooh, look. So cute! Her hair is getting long. She’s getting so big! I remember — EEEEEEEK!

WOMAN (spinning)

What?

MOTHER

What’s that?

The daughter hurries over and checks the viewfinder.

WOMAN

Oh. Chicken.

The mother peers at it more closely.

MOTHER

Goodness. I thought it was–

WOMAN

Cutlets. It’s an extreme close up.

MOTHER

Oh. I couldn’t quite make it out.

WOMAN

It’s a Barefoot Contessa recipe. I killed it.

MOTHER

Oh?

WOMAN

Yup. I was going to blog about it.

MOTHER (turning camera to side)

It looks…delicious.

WOMAN

Thanks. Anyway. Sorry to scare you.

She sits back down.

MOTHER

Oh, no. It was just unexpected. You don’t often see pictures of…dinner.

WOMAN

I know. Here–

The woman takes the camera from her mother and scrolls it.

WOMAN

A cute one of her at the pony rides…

MOTHER

Oh, now isn’t that sweet!

WOMAN

And on a playdate with her little friend…

MOTHER

Adorable!

Both gaze at the viewfinder, cooing. We FADE TO BLACK.
